“The impulse to make art comes when something precious is going to vanish. Art can be thought of as a bucket in which you preserve something valuable.”

Alain de Botton, Modern Wisdom (episode 1015)

Reflections

When you become a parent, the preciousness of time really sets in. Though the days often feel long, the years are short. Somehow, my daughter is almost four. My baby is no longer a baby.

Whether it’s the perception of time flying by, or possibly the recognition of my impermanence, I feel a compelling need to record all that is potentially valuable to my child. This is partially what motivates me to write. Writing has become my art form; the way in which I capture and preserve the most beautiful and valuable ideas I encounter.

My hope is to be around long enough to share these ideas with my daughter in person. If this is not the case, I find peace in knowing my writing will live on long after I’m gone, leaving behind a small piece of me that she can carry with her as she navigates this complex world.

“The art that you [create] is almost always the art that contains within it a bit of your true happiness.” – Alain de Botton

For anyone who stumbles upon my writing, I hope to pass along a bit of happiness.
