When it comes to eating, be consistent. A little intermittent fasting here and there is fine. There is definitely research to support the benefits of intermittent fasting. But, the majority of the time, focus on eating regularly. Why? Because eating regularly will make it much easier for you to regulate your hunger.
Case in point: If you “forget” to eat breakfast, what usually happens at lunch? You find the quickest edible thing you can get your hands on and start chowing down. You don’t really take the time to consider its nutritional value, nor do you care how it fits into the diet you were following just a minute before you started eating. The same thing goes for lunch. If you skip lunch, it’s likely that what you eat for dinner isn’t necessarily what you would have chosen had you filled up on something nutritious a few hours prior.
Eating often will prevent you from becoming “hangry” (irritable and unable to think clearly because of hunger). Let yourself get overly hungry and there’s a good chance that the next time you eat, you’ll way overdo it. You’ll end up eating so fast your brain won’t have time to register that your stomach is full and the message to stop eating won’t come until after you’ve inhaled everything on your plate. By eating regularly, you’ll have a lot less trouble listening to and acknowledging your internal hunger cues.
