“Wisdom isn’t about knowing more; it’s about seeing deeper.”

Ryan Holiday, Modern Wisdom

Reflections

Our brain has a seemingly unlimited capacity to hold information, but holding information is merely knowing it at face value, which renders it practically useless. We can fill our brains with endless ideas, but unless we take the time to really understand them, to unpack their deeper meaning and come to know them more intimately, we’re no wiser.

In a previous post, I wrote:

“The true essence of learning is understanding. Continuously engaging in the process of learning — the process of discovery — is the way we develop a deep understanding of the world around us. If we wish to walk through life knowledgeable and competent [. . .] we must utilize our enhanced cognitive capacities to reflect on the ideas we encounter and come to our own conclusions about their meaning, relevance, and usefulness to us as individuals.”

The path to true wisdom is paved with a continuous desire to learn; cultivate a curious mind, and wisdom will follow.
